The need for new entrants into business is timeless and so is guidance to them as to how to cope with what they will encounter. I needed it in 1970 just as much as they need it now. Technology has moved on apace, which will allow modern graduates to do things that would have been a pipedream in 1970, but people change little.

Those employed in corporate business will still compete, support, cheat, help, obstruct, deceive, mentor and manipulate others just like they have always done, so a guide as to how to recognise and use or counter this behaviour is now and will always be needed.

It is always important for those starting their careers to ask themselves how far they wish to go and how much they are prepared to sacrifice to get there, because progress will not be easy and will take all the knowledge and skill that individuals possess, together with a huge commitment of their personal lives, to succeed. My aim is to get readers to take a conscious decision in order to avoid either drifting into over-commitment or being disappointed because ambition outstripped commitment.
